UK Expels Iranian Diplomats

In the wake of an assault on the British embassy in Tehran, Her Majesty’s Government has lodged a formal complaint with the United Nations, alleging that the Iranian government participated in or permitted the unrest,  in violation of the Vienna Convention. The Convention requires all host states to defend foreign embassies on their soil.

In adition, the British government has shut down the embassy in question, evacuating all diplomatic staff and their families. In a statement before the House of Commons, British Foreign Secretary William Hague announced that the government of the United Kingdom was expelling all Iranian diplomats from British soil.

The Guardian Council of Iran has also given approval to a bill downgrading relations with Great Britain to the lowest possible level.
