‘Gaddafi has been killed’ says Libyan Prime Minister

Prime Minister of Libya Mahmoud Jibril has confirmed reports of the death of Muammar Gaddafi, former dictatorial “Brother Leader” of Libya, in a statement today.

“We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Moammar Gadhafi has been killed,” the National Transitional Council leader said, only hours after Arab news network Al Jazeera began to circulate graphic imagery of Colonel Gaddafi’s death at the hands of revolutionaries invading his hometown of Sirte. According to an NTC spokesperson, the body will be airlifted to Misrata, the third-largest Libyan city.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon confirmed the statement.

“In the coming days, we will witness scenes of celebration, as well as grief for those who lost so much,” he stated. “Yet let us recognize, immediately, that this is only the end of the beginning. The road ahead for Libya and its people will be difficult and full of challenges.”

International approval has been overwhelmingly positive so far. In Scotland and the United States, the families of the victims of the Lockerbie bombing (a Libyan bombing of a US airline over Lockerbie, Scotland) have reacted with happiness that the justice has been served, according to MSNBC.

“The world is a much better place without Gaddafi and Libya is certainly much better off,” stated one victim’s father.

Secretary of State Clinton has confirmed the US’s support for the National Transitional Council, promising technical and financial aid to help get the country back on its feet after its 247-day civil war.
