A Team To Watch: Girls Varsity Basketball

After last year’s action packed season, Girls Varsity Basketball is working hard to keep the momentum going. This year’s captains Kit Hamill, a four-time varsity basketball player, and Sydney Lowery, a proud member of the 1,000 point club, have been working with their new Coach Joseph Heinzmann during practices and games to help strengthen their young team in the hopes of making the FAA Championship.

They are already off to a great start with their first game, beating Greenwich Academy on December 11th with a score of 46-34.  They followed up in their second game triumphing over Westhill High School, winning 60-48 on Tuesday, December 15th. Coach Heinzmann sees the captains as great role models for the rest of the team, to inspire and motivate each player with hard work and a never-give-up attitude.  With so many talented players their season looks very promising and is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Speaking with the new coach, Joseph Heinzmann, gave a little bit of his background in coaching Girls Basketball.  He came to St. Luke’s after coaching at Ridgefield High School for the 2013 & 2014 seasons.  Prior to that he coached AAU basketball from 2006 to 2013.  Coach Heinzmann also leads Ridgefield’s Basketball Travel team.  When asked about the prospects for St. Luke’s season, Coach Heinzmann said “We have a young team, but that won’t hurt us.”  He also added, “there is a lot of young talent” on the team, and expects there will be struggles with some bigger teams, like Hamden Hall, but he knows they are definitely up to the challenge.  He was impressed with the speed of the team and believes “we will be an exciting explosive team.”

There is a game at Hamden Hall this Wednesday at 5:00 PM. If you can’t make that away game  the Varsity Girls Basketball team’s first home game will be this Saturday, January 9th at 1:00 p.m. against Greenwich Academy.  Sadly there are not too many home games this season before the FAA Tournament in February.  There are four more home games in January; Wednesday, January 13th against Masters, Friday, January 15 against King,  Monday, January 25th against Canterbury School and our Senior Day game on Saturday, January 30th against Millbrook School.  So come out and see first hand our explosive and exciting team and cheer them on to victory!
