Apple Unveils its Largest Product Roll-Out in History

On Tuesday, September 9th, Apple announced the release of its largest product roll-out in history. Two updated phones, a new watch, and revolutionary payment service were unveiled at the Keynote address in Cupertino, California.

Primarily, the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were the most anticipated products of the release. Both include a number of developments from their predecessors, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. Most noticeably, the 6 is .57 inches longer than the 5s, while the 6 Plus is a whopping 1.35 inches longer. Both phones are about .03 inches thinner than the 5s, but over 2 ounces heavier. With a Retina display, the 6 has the same resolution as the 5s at 326 ppi, while the 6 Plus is much higher at 401 ppi.

Within the phone, both the 6 and 6 Plus run on the A8 chip and are loaded with the iOS operating system. In addition, they are both complete with the fingerprint-security system on the home button. Due to the larger size, the on/off button is now on the right side of the phone, as opposed to its location on the top of all earlier iPhone models.

Features of the 6 and 6 Plus include a new 8-megapixel camera that can take time lapse videos, panoramas, and still-photos during a video recording. The phones come in silver, gold, or space gray. The starting prices for a basic 16GB are $199 for the 6 and $299 for the 6 Plus. Preorder began on Friday, September 12th, and they will be available in stores on Friday, September 19th.

In addition to the phones, CEO Tim Cook also announced the release of the Apple Watch to be in stores in early 2015. It will come in three different styles, Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Apple Watch Edition.

As its most basic function, the Watch automatically adjusts to local time and is accurate to the millisecond. In addition, the system will be synced with your calendar to display notifications right on the bottom of the screen. In correlation with an iPhone, notifications, phone calls, and texts will come through on the Watch.

In addition to traditional modes of communication, the Watch includes apps to sketch back and forth with friends, walkie-talkies, and vibrations to communicate heartbeat and taps. It also can be used as a fitness tracker as it has a built-in heart rate monitor, accelerometer, and GPS to measure traveled distance. Watch-specific apps such as iPod, a remote camera for iPhone, or Siri are tailored to the Watch experience and use vibrations and discreet sounds to notify the user.

Finally, both the new iPhones and Apple Watch contain the programming necessary to participate in Apple Pay, a revolutionary payment device that eliminates the need for a wallet or credit cards. Using the fingerprint sensor on the 6 or 6 Plus or the skin sensor on the Watch, customers will be able to pay in over 220,000 participating stores. Secure and private, Apple Pay will be available for use in mid-October, 2014.

As a whole, the 2014 Keynote revealed yet again the Apple has the ability to transform our global culture, community, and economy in ways that only time will be able to reveal.
