SLS Debate Storms into After-School Activities

A new activity, but not-so-new club, is taking SLS by storm this fall- and that, of course, is Debate.

The club, run by Faculty Advisors Mrs. Yavenditti and Dr. Bramlett, has partnered with Model UN to offer an after-school activity. In addition to, well, debating, they’re also looking to learn more about current events and hone in on public speaking skills during the process.

The Debate team participates in monthly Connecticut Debate Association (CDA) competitions which feature teams of two debaters representing their respective schools.  SLS will face off against various public and independent schools across Fairfield County as well as the rest of the state of Connecticut.

Captains Eliza Posner and Tom Howells, both ‘16, help both Upper and Middle School club members to develop these important communication skills as highly experienced debaters themselves. Posner placed as the top varsity speaker at the Darien High School competition in March as a sophomore last year. Howells, her partner, helped the duo place as the fourth best team in the same competition by going undefeated in all three of their debates.

In the Model UN portion, there will be a few competitions around the Tri-State area which will lead to a end-of-year conference at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

This year is sure to be even more promising for the Debate team with everyday practice from 3:00-5:00 after-school in Room 324 as compared to their rotational lunch meetings in years prior.

Be sure to look out for the Debate this year as they both continue and further their success. They will certainly make the St. Luke’s community proud.
