Boys Lacrosse Nets a Few Wins

Returning from heartbreaking losses in the championship game of the FAA tournament and the NEPSAC tournament in the 2012 season, the St. Luke’s Boys Varsity lacrosse team is seeking redemption this season.

Although a strong senior class of 2012 has graduated, the team feels they can repeat last year’s success and capture the titles that eluded them last season. Led by team captains Mack Dowling ‘13, Andrew Sudano ‘13, and Sam Drews ‘13, the team looks promising this year. With the goaltending position left open by Adam Connelly’s graduation, up and coming rookie sensation Jamie Rich ‘16 took advantage of the situation and proved himself through the first 4 games to be the starting goalie for this season.

Wyett Dalton ‘14 had this to say about Jamie’s play so far: “The kid is like a wall; it’s awesome to see him dominate the field in such a way, and I don’t know where we would be without him”. That’s high praise coming from returning varsity lacrosse player like Dalton.

With Jamie’s help, the team has started the season with a 2-2 record, but they are heating up and look to improve their win-loss ratio. After a disappointing 5-2 loss against Hopkins, the team rebounded with strong wins against Suffield and Hamden Hall, 9-8 and 8-2, respectively. The team hit a bit of a rough spot against Gunnery, but looks to rebound Monday against Hackley.

The players want to regain the offensive groove they found during the games against Suffield and Hamden Hall. Mack Dowling is currently leading the team in goals, but the team receives scoring help on a regular basis from attackers Peter Baritz ’14, Doug Butman ’14, and Jared Kuehner ‘16. The team has managed to survive offensively due to contributions from the bench and from the midfielders like Paul Freeman ’14 and Wyett Dalton.

Back on defense, Andrew Sudano is holding down the fort with the help of Noah Daniel ‘15 and Christian Kennedy ’15. When asked about Andrew Sudano’s style of defense that is so effective, Paul Freeman had this to say, “If you are playing attack against Sudano and you hold onto the ball for a second too long before you pass it, you will learn a lesson you’ll never forget.” Upon further questioning, Paul said “Sudano has the upper body strength of a Minotaur and when he slashes your arm, you will lose the ball and run away from him.”

With the combination of returning juniors and seniors, as well as the incoming talented freshmen and sophomores, the St. Luke’s Boys Varsity team looks primed and ready to have another successful season here on the Hilltop.
