Storm Victorious in Dan Rorke Bowl

As St. Luke’s students came off the fan bus, they swarmed the bleachers in their Storm gear, hoping to see a St. Luke’s victory. There was a November chill in the air, as students were bundled in their sweatshirts and the player’s hands were a fiery red. Despite the conditions, the St. Luke’s fans and players would leave Kingswood-Oxford’s field happy, as Coach Noel Thomas’ team came up victorious.

The Storm gathers around the Dan Rorke Trophy.

After a heart-breaking 18-12 loss versus the King School on Senior Day, the Storm Football Team avenged themselves beating the Hyde School by a narrow score of 28-26. The defeat of the Hyde School earned St. Luke’s the Dan Rorke Bowl. However, the victory was certainly not a breeze.

Led by runningback Noel Thomas ’13 and second-year quarterback Charlie Nelson ’13, the Storm were able to run themselves to a victory. Both players, by rushing for two touchdowns each, helped contribute to the biggest win of the season. The Senior quarterback also added 100 yards passing, while only throwing one interception.

Perhaps, the biggest play of the game came from Charlie Nelson, scoring the go ahead touchdown with 3:10 remaining in the game. After a successful two-point conversion the Storm had an eight-point lead. Yet, the skilled Hyde Team would not go down without a fight. In just 45 seconds, the Wolfpack were able to go down the field and score a touchdown on the final play of the game. The play was a 25-yard pass, cutting the Storm lead to a meager two points.

It was all up to the ensuing two-point conversion. Hyde ran the ball to the right but the strong Storm defense led by Noel Thomas and Robert Wood ’14 were able to stop the Wolfpack just inches short. When asked how it felt to make the game-winning tackle Wood replied, “It was easily one of the best feelings ever tackling him right before the goal line. And the fact that the tackle won the game was the icing on the cake.”

After the game Noel Thomas was especially jubilant. “It felt amazing to win!” he said, “It was the best way to end our great season.”

So, what does next year look like for the Storm? Since stars Charlie Nelson ‘13, Andrew Sudano ‘13, Noel Thomas ‘13, and Myles Gaines ’13 will be departing next year look for Robert Wood ’14, Bryan Latorraca ’14, and Alex Libman ’15 to have big seasons. But in the meantime, enjoy the special performance the Storm Football Team have put on for us this season.
