Boys Varsity Basketball Preview

Last year’s Boys Varsity Basketball season was a roller coaster for the St. Luke’s athletic community that will not easily be forgotten. The team clinched the FAA title, defeating Hamden Hall, only to be dealt a crushing blow at the NEPSAC finals, once again versus Hamden Hall. This year, the team hopes to win it all, bringing an intense desire and drive to the court. Senior captain, Adam Connolly, says “We really have to bring it everyday in order to try to fulfill our goals and aspirations for this season.” The team seems more motivated to succeed than ever, and all the players are fired up for another exciting season. Junior captain, Jackson Prince, is very optimistic and applauds his teammates work ethic. “We’re going to come to practice everyday, and work hard, so that when game time comes around we can execute to perfection.”

In the practices so far this season, the team has focused on backtracking and mastering the basics. “We need to focus on rebounding, man to man defense, hustling and boxing out to be successful,” says 8th grade superstar Jay Latta. Junior Aidan Stone also adds, “If we can make a good stop on defense, we can get a good offensive possession and take it to the hoop.” Given the teams stellar performance last season one thing’s for sure, if the boys continue to perfect their game, and work on the basics, they will stand a real chance of sniping the FAA title this year, if not the NEPSAC.

Evan Kenagy ('12) hopes to be a "slam dunk" this season.

Another major contributor to the team’s success last year was The Sixth Man. This SLS fan group, run this year by senior Dan Kagan, attributes to much of the teams past success. The intensity that Kagan and other fans bring to the game elevates the excitement for both the players and the fans. Freshman Kevin Florio says the cheering and support “gave the team spirit and momentum when they were down.”

This sense of community is also found within the team itself. Adam Connolly even referred to the players as a “band of brothers.” It’s clear that the SLS Varsity Basketball team will continue to work hard day in and day out preparing for the upcoming season. Make sure to come out and support the Storm on Tuesday, December 6th  as they battle against Greens Farms Academy, in the Athletic Center. The team hopes to get the win on Tuesday and everyone looks forward to an exciting season. No one has said it better than senior Luke Osherow; “You better bring your umbrellas, because it’s about to rain threes.”
