An #EdJourney Affirmation

If you care about students, schools, and the future of education, but aren’t familiar with Grant Lichtman, do yourself a favor and check out his blog now.

Grant is currently in the midst of a cross-country journey (#edjourney on Twitter) in his Toyota Prius, visiting schools that he feels will reveal something about the nature of innovation in American education.  I’ve been on a few school visits before, and they always serve as remarkable professional development experiences – when “normal” is what you see around you every day, nothing beats a change of scenery to offer fresh insights on what we’re thankful for, what we wish we had but don’t, and where we think we ought to be heading.  Imagine, then, being the proverbial fly on the wall of the Prius as Grant visits literally dozens of schools who are creating inspirational models of educational innovation.  From Science Leadership Academy and Episcopal Academy in Philly, Dalton and Marymount in New York, to Hawken and Hathaway Brown in Cleveland, Grant’s visits  offer unique perspectives on a wide variety of schools and curricular approaches.

Grant stopped by St. Luke’s to visit the Center for Leadership on his journey, and I can’t tell you how valuable an experience it was to be on the hosting end.  Spending the morning talking with him, connecting with the insights he’s discovered on his journey, reflecting on the probing questions he asks and interesting issues he raises about the nature of our school and the way we pursue our mission… about as rewarding as it gets.

I hope you’ll read, and continue to follow along with him for the remainder of his journey!
